Job Description – Legal Counsel, Privacy

 

Due to ongoing growth, Trulioo seeks a highly motivated and talented Legal Counsel, Privacy to join its high performing team. Reporting to the Director & Senior Legal Counsel, Global Privacy & Data Protection, the Legal Counsel, Privacy will serve as a key member of the global privacy function at Trulioo and provide strategic advice to the business on privacy and data protection.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

 

  • Support the Director & Senior Legal Counsel on legal matters relating to building and maintaining the organization’s privacy function.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to the organization on matters related to privacy laws and regulations on a national and global scale (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, PIPEDA).
  • Negotiate complex commercial agreements with both customers and suppliers, with a focus on privacy, data protection, and technology.
  • Conduct privacy assessments.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to privacy compliance.
  • Conduct training and education sessions for employees on privacy regulations.
  • Conduct investigations and recording/reporting of privacy incidents.
  • Assist in responding to requests from regulatory bodies or individuals regarding privacy matters.
  • Conduct research and analysis on privacy laws and regulations on a global scale and monitor changes.

 

Education and Professional Skills/Knowledge

 

  • LL.B. or J.D. degree (or equivalent).
  • Good standing with a Canadian Law Society.
  • 3+ years of privacy law experience at a major law firm and/or in house.
  • Strong commercial skillset with demonstrated contract negotiation experience.
  • IAPP certification would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in the following areas would be considered an asset:
    • Exposure to international privacy laws, particularly EU and US privacy laws
    • Data mapping and data flows
    • AI, machine learning and/or biometric data privacy issues
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to coordinate work that involves multiple departments.
  • Highly responsive and diligent with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong research skills.
