Job Description – Legal Counsel, Real Estate
The Legal Counsel, Real Estate will provide legal expertise, advice, and support across a broad range of matters related to the company’s real estate portfolio. This includes reviewing, preparing, and negotiating complex legal agreements and leading special projects and transactions to support continued expansion across Canada.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Provide legal guidance for new property openings and ongoing operations.
- Advise real estate managers and directors on lease terms and negotiation strategies.
- Draft, review, negotiate, and finalize offers to lease, head leases, and lease renewals.
- Prepare and revise a range of real estate documents including lease amending agreements, assignments, non-disturbance agreements, estoppel certificates, and storage agreements.
- Negotiate legal precedent documents with landlords.
- Lead legal real estate projects with a focus on risk mitigation and value maximization.
- Provide advice to internal stakeholders and franchisees regarding real estate laws and lease documentation across Canada.
Education and Professional Skills/Knowledge
- Member in good standing with the Canadian Law Society, ideally called in British Columbia or eligible for transfer.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience practicing commercial real estate law, with an emphasis on leasing (retail leasing experience preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to translate business objectives into practical legal solutions.
- Advanced knowledge of leasing, contract law, and general legal principles.
- Proven experience independently managing files and collaborating in fast-paced, team-based environments.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and drafting skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and a pragmatic, business-oriented approach.
Compensation: Starting from $114,000 to $142,500 per annum.
