Job Description – Assistant General Counsel

 

Our client is seeking a skilled and business-minded Assistant General Counsel to join its legal team in Vancouver. This is a broad, fast-paced corporate commercial role that will require the successful candidate to engage across departments and operational teams. The successful candidate will act as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders and play a key role in helping guide legal and business decisions in a dynamic environment.

This is a rare opportunity for a practical, collaborative, and relationship-oriented lawyer to step into a visible in-house position with strong mentorship, cross-functional exposure, and meaningful opportunities to take ownership of projects and initiatives.

 

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

 

  • Provide pragmatic and solutions-oriented legal advice across the organization to departments including operations, finance, sales, and more.
  • Manage a wide range of corporate commercial matters, including acting as a strategic legal advisor on business initiatives/projects, drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, and structuring of and advising on transactions, and facilitating internal process improvements.
  • Collaborate with external counsel as required.
  • Navigate cross-functional relationships and support continuous learning across multiple departments.
  • Contribute to mapping and improving legal workflows and risk management frameworks.

 

Education and Professional Skills/Knowledge

 

  • LL.B. or J.D. degree (or equivalent).
  • Member in good standing with a Canadian Law Society.
  • 10-15 years of broad corporate commercial experience, with some experience gained in an in-house legal environment. Natural resources industry experience is considered an asset.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with internal stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to build trust and rapport across teams.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities and diverse legal issues.
  • Proactive in encouraging collaboration amongst colleagues and key stakeholders.

Compensation: $200,000 to $250,000 per annum, plus bonus, long-term incentive plan, pension, comprehensive benefits, and more.
