Why send a thank-you note after an interview?

September 25, 2019

Once an interview is over, most candidates either forget, don’t bother, or are intimidated to send a thank-you note to the interviewer(s).

We do not realize how a simple act of sending a thoughtfully expressed note of gratitude post-interview can make a huge difference in our job-hunting journey.

What does a thank-you note say about you?

  • You have good values, and are respectful and courteous.
  • You are grateful for the time and energy spent meeting with you.
  • You appreciated the connection and conversation.
  • You have continued interest in learning about the organisation, team, and role.

What can a thank-you do for you?

A simple note of gratitude may not guarantee you’ll land a job, but it can reflect very favorably on your candidacy. Very few candidates send thank-you notes, so you would automatically stand out if you did. Interviewers will also likely keep you ‘fresh in mind’ as hiring decisions are made.

Don’t be intimidated to write a thank-you note – sending one can serve as a reminder of your candidacy after the interview process and help further strengthen your network. Try to send a thank-you note within 24 hours of the interview and be sure to tailor the message for each interviewer. A thank-you note can also give you the opportunity to reiterate certain points from the interview, as well as allow you address things that were missed. Keep your note short, simple, concise, and genuine since interviewers can be very good at assessing authenticity.

Gratitude is a virtue everyone, including lawyers at any stage of their career, should cultivate. A genuine thank-you note can be an important part of consistently expressing gratitude and can go a long way in the next step in your career journey.
